About Nari and Jourllis
In the world of Felithian, our story takes place on the continent of Jourllis. (oor - lis)
For as long as anyone in this land can remember, two sides have always been at war. The Weapons, created by the god Faliel, and the Sorcerers, created by the god Myrthas. The reason for why they fight was lost long ago and is rumored to be a conflict started by their two gods rather than their own personal grievances. After many millennia of fighting, the two sides attempted to come to a truce but were foiled by the Magus, a race created by a third deity named Pavao, and the war resumed.
The Weapons, which are our focus as they are Ashnari's people, is the race that favors physical prowess as their key weapon. Weapons, much like their namesake, hold the ability to transform their inner strength, and even themselves, into a physical manifestation of a blade and fight with them. The blades, unlike ordinary swords and axes, change with whoever is wielding them which is why it was only logical to combine a weapon's strength with another. Eventually the race was split into two categories, Blades who had great physical strength and Wielders who would wield the Blades into battle.
Unfortunately, this was the beginning of a sometimes very cruel hierarchy in their society. Generally Blades and Wielders were combined of their own choice, especially since a Weapon had the ability to wield their own manifestation though at a lower level of strength. However, as mortal nature tended to be, some Weapons became greedy and avaricious, seeking to instill their will over other Weapons because of lust or a desire for power. This led to some Wielders attaining their blade through brute strength, either by challenging the Blade to a duel and beating them and then forcing the bond on them, or simply just taking them without warning.
Though the Champion tried to impose laws to stop this, the tradition continued until oppressed Blades were common. The bond, which was completed by the Wielder placing their dominant hand over the Blade's weaponmark (a unique symbol all Weapons have) and saying "My will over yours." was disastrously easy to complete and nearly impossible to escape for the Blade. Wielders often encompassed total control over the Blade as their inner strength determined the Blade's strength in battle.
The stronger their willpower, the harder the Blade was to break. However, a weak Wielder could get their Blade broken in battle which meant an almost instantaneous death sentence for the other Weapon. Worse, a Wielder who desired their Blade to break could fracture the weapon and kill them themselves. Because of this, many Weapons began to fear the bond and took excessive measures to keep from having it forced on them. One of these fearful weapons was Ashnari.
Ashnari, who grew up watching his sister being forced to endure difficult battle after difficult battle and always coming back battered and bloody, came to fear the bond greatly. He did not want a Wielder who could hold that kind of control over his existence and so, before his coming of age ceremony where he would become an eligible fighter, fled with two others who had similar mindsets. For a while they wandered Jourllis pretending to be Nomads. People who had no god and instead paid patronage to the land itself.
Although the three did eventually part ways, one to go back to their people and the other because she felt Nari was slowing her down, Ashnari continued his travels, always staying well away from the Weapons, Sorcerers and Magus to the north. That left him primarily in the south where he lived and traveled with many Nomads and lived the life of freedom he always wanted, free of the worry that someday someone would forced him into a bond.
All that came crashing down around his ears, however, when Jourllis learned that non-Weapons could force the bond. That it had never come out before was merely because the Weapons had treated the act of creating a bond as sacred as marriage. Something that could never be committed with a non-Weapon. A secret that ended when the new Champion, the leader of the Weapons, and the Archmage sealed a bond together.
Suddenly everyone desired to capture a Weapon, most especially the Magus who, despite wielding both sword and magic, did not have the ability to forge a blade on the level of a Weapon's. The only blessing at that point was that the war between the Weapons and Sorcerers had finally been resolved by the two new leaders of both sides. Nari, realizing that his identity as a Weapon had to be kept secret if he wanted to remain free, continued to wander around the continent, never settling in one place for too long.
